The story today was the internal composition, not the index level. The Nasdaq fell 1.25% and tech 1.79%, while energy (+2.97%) and staples (+2.11%) rose enough to leave the Dow slightly higher. The trigger was a report that OpenAI's annualized revenue is $20 billion lower than earlier estimates, which shook demand assumptions in the AI capex cycle and hit Oracle (-5.48%), ARM (-6.48%) and Micron (-4.79%) together. WTI rose 3.29%, reviving inflation worries, while the 10-year yield stayed elevated in the low 5.2s. Notably, AI hardware was weak but software names such as Adobe, Snowflake and Palantir rose. This reads as a repricing of capex expectations rather than a collapse of AI as a whole. With high rates and high oil overlapping, we stay cautious until a rebound is confirmed.

🇰🇷 Korean Investor Perspective

USD/KRW rose 3.49 won to 1,343.23 (a weaker won), back in the 1,340s, which slightly cushions the won-translated losses of unhedged holders of US assets. Korean-favorite ETFs fell: QQQ -1.34%, SPY -0.42%, and the 3x leveraged TQQQ -4.05%, with leveraged products showing the sharpest drop. Micron (MU), closely tied to Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, fell 4.79% to $1,035.84, a headwind for Korea's memory sector. On a day when AI demand expectations were shaken, investors heavy in semiconductors should check both the won and volatility and scale in gradually.

📊 Market Overview

US stocks closed mixed on October 8 (local time). The S&P 500 fell 36.41 points (-0.47%) to 7,765.36, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 345.35 points (-1.25%) to 27,193.34, its second straight decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, by contrast, rose 51.77 points (+0.10%) to 51,231.64, the only major index to gain. Technology led the declines while energy and staples cushioned the Dow.

The session was shaken by doubts about demand assumptions in the AI investment cycle. After a Financial Times report that OpenAI's annualized revenue is $20 billion lower than earlier estimates, Nvidia (-2.94%), Micron (-4.79%) and Intel (-5.34%) fell in turn, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped as much as 4% intraday before trimming losses. Oil also rose, reviving inflation worries: WTI gained 3.29% to $91.18 and Brent traded around $103-104. The 10-year Treasury yield hit a multi-year high intraday, then closed at 5.23%, still very elevated.

🔑 Key Issues

1. OpenAI revenue report hits AI infrastructure names After the FT report, AI infrastructure stocks sold off together. ARM fell 6.48% to $275.29, Oracle 5.48% to $135.69 and Broadcom 4.35% to $360.14. AMD (-3.90%) and Nvidia (-2.94%) also declined, and memory bellwether Micron (MU) fell 4.79% to $1,035.84. Oracle, heavily tied to large OpenAI contracts, was hit especially hard. The technology sector ETF (XLK) fell 1.79%, the weakest of 11 sectors.

2. Oil jumps, energy leads Middle East supply worries, reports of attacks on shipping near the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Mexico output cuts from a tropical storm lifted crude. President Trump said the US would not attack Iran before the midterm elections, trimming gains, but WTI still closed up 3.29%. ConocoPhillips (+3.35%), Chevron (+3.12%) and Exxon Mobil (+2.71%) rose, and the energy ETF (XLE) was the strongest at +2.97%.

3. Defensives and software hold up Consumer staples rose 2.11%, with Walmart (+2.22%), Coca-Cola (+2.27%), McDonald's (+2.61%) and P&G (+1.87%) advancing, and Home Depot gained 3.39%. In software, Adobe (+3.56%), Snowflake (+3.17%) and Salesforce (+1.44%) rose, diverging sharply from AI hardware. Goldman Sachs upgraded Palantir to Buy with a $230 target, and the stock gained about 3%.

4. PepsiCo earnings and the start of Q3 season PepsiCo reported Q3 adjusted EPS of $2.34 (vs. about $2.29 expected) on revenue of $25.27 billion, beating estimates, though it lowered its core EPS growth outlook to 2.5%-3%. FactSet estimates S&P 500 Q3 earnings growth at 29.5%, which would be a third straight quarter above 25%. As earnings season gets going, whether AI demand shows up in results is the key question.

5. Labor data and crypto Initial jobless claims fell by 2,000 to 197,000, while continuing claims rose 17,000 to 1.71 million. Layoffs remain low. Bitcoin fell about 2% to around $81,000, a roughly three-week low, with $974 million in liquidations over 24 hours. Coinbase, Strategy and Robinhood each fell about 1%.

🚀 SPCX (SpaceX) Update

SPCX fell 4.19% to $160.57, its second straight decline, as large growth stocks absorbed both AI-demand doubts and high rates. We found no SPCX-specific negative news for the day, and the drop was similar in size to other high-valuation growth names such as ARM (-6.48%) and AMD (-3.90%). We could not verify whether volume was unusual.

⚠️ Investor Cautions

When signals emerge that the demand premise of the AI investment cycle is wobbling, AI hardware names can fall around 5% in a day. A single report sending Oracle, ARM and Micron down together shows risk concentrating in highly correlated holdings. The 4.05% drop in 3x leveraged TQQQ also deserves attention. Rising oil makes the inflation path uncertain again, and while the 10-year stays in the low 5% range, valuation pressure on growth stocks persists. The CNN Fear & Greed value in this report is an estimate because the official reading could not be confirmed.

👁 What to Watch Tomorrow

  1. S&P 500 7,700 support: From the 7,765.36 close, the 7,700 area is the next support; a rebound's first hurdle is reclaiming the prior close of 7,801.77.
  2. Defending Nasdaq 27,000: At 27,193.34 the cushion is thin; a break could deepen the tech correction.
  3. UMich Consumer Sentiment (prelim, Friday 10:00 a.m. ET): Check whether inflation expectations reflect higher oil. Consensus could not be confirmed, so keep surprise direction open.
  4. Technical rebound in AI names: Whether Oracle and ARM recoup losses or fall further is a gauge of AI-trade health. Watch for follow-up reporting and any official response from OpenAI.
  5. Oil and the 5.23% 10-year: Further oil gains could refocus attention on rates and inflation. Volatility may build ahead of the September CPI on October 14.
